Recreation Therapy Strength and Wellness Program



Due to physical distancing guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Shelter in Place orders for the City of San Francisco, our recreation programs are only being offered virtually at this time. See below for more information.


Recreation Therapy Strength and Wellness VA Video Connect Program

  1. Recreation Therapy Program Orientation/Leisure Education (Any clinician can refer)
  • 1:1 program focused on assisting Veterans in identifying recreation and leisure activities of interest and creating a plan to increase activity level. This session can also be utilized as an introduction to our Recreation Therapy services for Veterans who are not familiar with any of our offerings.
  • Ideal Candidates:
    • Newly enrolled to SFVAHCS
    • Not familiar with local community resources
    • Unsure of what he/she needs to improve their leisure lifestyle
    • History of depression, isolation, anxiety, social phobia, PTSD, substance abuse
    • Recent medical issues that have diminished their ability to engage in activities
    • Interest in balance work/school/family life with more self-care activities
    • Looking to connect with other Veterans and increase sense of community and camaraderie
  1. VVC 1:1 Flexibility and Fitness Training (Requires referral for medical clearance from primary care provider)
  • 1:1 program focused on assisting Veterans in staying physically active through the participation in structured flexibility, cardiovascular, and strength-based exercise routines at home and outdoors in their neighborhood (practicing safe social distancing). Veterans will also receive Leisure education (see description above) when enrolled in this program.
  • Ideal Candidates for 1:1 and group exercise programs:
    • Focused on weight loss
    • Focused on improving flexibility and mobility
    • Focused on improving strength and cardiovascular conditioning
    • History of chronic pain, diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary issues, neuropathy, joint and back issues
    • History of depression, isolation, anxiety, social phobia, PTSD, substance abuse
    • Difficulty with initiating and maintaining a structured exercise and wellness routine
    • Veterans who would like to balance work/school/family life with more self-care activities
  1. Mindful Flexibility Class (Requires referral for medical clearance from primary care provider)
  • Group class format focused on flexibility, stretching, breathing, and mindful movements. Great for relaxation, stress relief, and sharpening focus as well. 
  • Ideal Candidates:
    • Focused on improving flexibility, range of motion, balance and mobility
    • Focused on improving functional fitness
    • Focused on low impact, relaxing movement class
    • History of anxiety, PTSD, depression, substance abuse
  1. Group Fitness Training Class (Requires referral for medical clearance from primary care provider)
  • Group class format focused on flexibility, cardiovascular conditioning, and strength-based exercise routines. Great for increasing strength, improving muscle tone, improving heart health, and increased time spent with fellow Veterans in a safe, social setting.
  • Ideal Candidates for group exercise programs:
    • Focused on weight loss
    • Focused on improving flexibility and mobility
    • Focused on improving strength and cardiovascular conditioning
    • History of chronic pain, diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary issues, neuropathy, joint and back issues
    • Looking to connect with other Veterans and increase sense of community and camaraderie
