San Francisco VA Health Care System

Student Veteran Health Program

Bridget Leach and Kathleen Mink
Bridget Leach, LCSW (left), and Kathleen Mink, LCSW, along with three other San Francisco VA Health Care System staff members, provide outreach and support services to student Veterans at four Northern California community colleges as part of the San Francisco VA’s Student Veteran Health Program.

Established in 2010, the Student Veteran Health Program (SVHP) was created by the San Francisco VA Health Care System in partnership with local Northern California colleges to assist student Veterans. The program has been nationally recognized as a model community partnership between educational institutions and the Department of Veterans Affairs. The SVHP is one of 25 funded VA programs under the Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership (VITAL) initiative, part of the VA’s national effort to outreach and provide services to support student Veterans. The SVHP, with the support of student Veterans, administration, faculty and leadership at the SFVA, has led the nation in providing an array of comprehensive services to student Veterans on campus including outreach, workshops and mental health services. In addition, the SVHP has a close working relationship with many college leaders and staff, which has led to more open and ongoing communications with academic departments, faculty and student services with the intent of better supporting and connecting student Veterans to valuable campus resources.

The SVHP provides outreach to a number of different colleges, as well as more extensive services at City College of San Francisco, Skyline College, College of the Redwoods and Napa Valley College.
