San Francisco VA Health Care System

Hospital Medicine

Our physicians (called "hospitalists") care for Veterans who have been admitted to the hospital for an illness or following a planned surgery. We work collaboratively on inter-disciplinary teams to provide high-quality, compassionate, and patient-centered care, and are committed to clear and timely communication with Veterans, their families, and primary doctors. Our hospitalists are active in research endeavors as well as numerous quality and patient safety initiatives. We are strongly committed to medical education and are highly integrated in teaching activities throughout the UCSF School of Medicine and residency training programs.

Faculty Hospitalist Service (FHS)  We directly care for Veterans with complex medical and psychosocial co-morbidities, hospitalized for acute and chronic illnesses, and often with special placement needs.

Swing/Nocturnist  Our hospitalists are available 24/7 to assist in coverage of all hospitalized medical patients, new admissions, trainee supervision and assistance, and other medical emergencies.

Medical Wards  Forty percent of all teaching medical teams (with resident and student trainees) are led by our hospitalist attending physicians throughout the year.

Co-Management  We jointly care for and follow patients with complicated medical illnesses or perioperative complications with surgery teams in orthopedics, neurosurgery & podiatry.

Medicine Consult  We provide 24/7 coverage for medical consults on inpatient teams.
