As part of VA’s focus on ensuring that Veterans receive timely access to health care, the Veteran Appointment Request (VAR) mobile app is now available at the San Francisco VA Health Care System.

If you are a Veteran currently receiving VA care at the San Francisco VA Health Care System, VAR can help you stay on top of your medical appointments while on the go.  You will have the option of accessing VAR from any device with an Internet connection, including smartphones, tablets or other mobile devices.

With VAR, you can directly schedule or request primary care appointments and request mental health appointments at facilities where you have a Patient Aligned Care Team. You will also be able to:

  • See appointment details
  • Track the status of requests
  • Send messages about the requested appointments
  • Get notifications about appointments
  • Cancel most appointments, including all appointments made through the app

 “VA developed VAR so that Veterans can stay organized and on top of their appointments. VAR allows you to manage your medical appointments with flexibility and ease,” said Dr. Deyne Bentt, Chief Health Informatics Officer at the Washington, D.C. VA Medical Center and Clinical Director of Mobile Health Deployment and Evaluation within the Veterans Health Administration’s Office of Connected Care. “We wanted to eliminate the need for Veterans to have to call their VA facility to speak directly with a scheduler. We hope that the ability to submit a request at any time of day further empowers Veterans to be active participants in their health. “

Through VAR, you can clearly designate preferred times and dates when you would like to make primary or mental health appointments with your VA care team. VA is working to expand VAR’s functionality to allow you to request and schedule other types of appointments, including audiology, optometry, and more, in the near future.  You can also track the status of your requests and view upcoming appointments through the app, giving you increased control over your schedule.

The app is now available from the VA App Store at https://veteran.mobilehealth.va.gov/veteran-appointment-requests/, where you can also find training materials to help you use the app.
