As a teaching hospital, the San Francisco VA Medical Center provides a full range of services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research.
Academic Partners
San Francisco VA Health Care System is fully affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco.* We offer residency training in all major medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. Associated Health Training is offered in nursing, psychology, audiology, social work, dietetics, and pharmacy.
The Health Care System funds 189.2 Residency and Fellow positions and 40 allied health professional trainees. We have more than 700 UCSF trainees from 36 clinical programs rotate through our Medical Center and our community-based outpatient clinics in Downtown San Francisco and San Bruno.
NCIRE - the Veterans Health Research Institute
NCIRE - the Veterans Health Research Institute is a self-funded, private, nonprofit research institute, established in 1988 to administer health research at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.
They are the larg
est of the 86 nonprofit research institutes associated with the Department of Veterans Affairs nationwide.
NCIRE supports the research of over 200 MD and PhD San Francisco VAMC principal investigators who work to improve health and health care for Veterans and active military personnel on the frontiers of many fields, including brain imaging, neurodegenerative disease, post traumatic stress disorder, cardiovascular disease, cancer, hepatitis, and HIV. Investigators include biologists, biochemists, cardiologists, epidemiologists, geriatric researchers, immunologists, molecular biologists, and neuroscientists. Veterans Service Organizations
San Francisco VAMC maintains a good working relationship with all of our Veterans service organization (VSO) partners. We regularly brief our VSO representatives on changes impacting Veterans' health care.
A Veterans Advisory Council (VAC) has been established which includes stakeholders from a number of Veterans groups. The VAC meets quarterly.
The San Francisco County Veterans Service Office* serves Veterans and their dependents with the filing of complex claims for various benefits they are eligible to receive.
The main office is located on 2 Gough Street in San Francisco. Hours of operation are Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Their number (which was changed in February 2016) is now (415) 934-4201.
