Here are some frequently asked questions and answers for Veterans interested in adopting or cat or dog through this program:
Can the Pets for Vets program help me with treatment of my pet's illness?
No, we only cover the initial adoption fee, dog license fee, and dog training classes.
If my landlord doesn’t allow pets, can I still adopt a pet?
Only under the special circumstances. Please visit www.bazelon.org (Fair Housing Information Sheet # 6) for more information.
Who may I contact for more information?
Jamye Kubick at (415) 221-4810, ext. 2-2004, or SFPets4Vets@outlook.com
How do I get a free portrait with my pet?
That benefit is occasionally available through this program. Contact Jamye Kubick (above) to inquire if it is currently available.
Can ‘Pets for Vets’ animals be registered as service animals or emotional support animals?
Probably not. Pets for Vets is a program fostering pet companionship. For more information on Service Animal and Emotional Support designation, whether for PTSD or other psychological needs, please call your local Animal Care and Control office to see if your pet qualifies.
How do I start?
Simply contact Wonder Dog Rescue and request an appointment to begin their screening procedure.
Is SFVAHCS' Pets for Vets program affiliated with the national non-profit organization with the same name?
No, our local program began in 2000. The national Pets for Vets program began in 2009, completely separate from this program, and with different objectives.
