It’s true; World AIDS Day is December 1. But SFVAMC observes it a little longer! On Friday, December 2, several of our local Veterans will showcase their artistic creations in the Teak Room (Bldg. 200, 1st floor) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You’re invited to peruse the displays of oil paintings, watercolors, pencil drawings, acrylics, mixed media, pottery, and stationery cards.

What’s special about our artists is that they are Veteran patients living with HIV who receive care at our Medical Center. “Our goal is to present a positive image of patients living with HIV disease,” said Infectious Disease Clinic Charge Nurse Cindy Burt, RN, MSN. “We invite you to stop by, take a look at the artwork, enjoy some light refreshments, and there will also be handouts with information on HIV.”

Did you know that the Department of Veterans Affairs is the largest provider of care to those living with HIV/AIDS in the United States? There are over 24,000 Veterans in VA care who live with HIV/AIDS.

Because of VA’s high-quality care, Veterans with HIV/AIDS live longer, healthier lives. That being said, the VA recommends that all adults – not just those who think they are at risk – get tested as part of their routine medical care. Do you know your HIV status? The only way you can find out for sure is by getting tested.  How? “See your primary care provider,” said Burt.
